Traffic Islands

There are two traffic islands, one at each end of America Way. Initially, only the island at East Shore Road was built. Over time the soil became depleted, the trees shaded out planting, and the junipers became infected with a fungus disease. Proposals were requested from six landscape firms.

The general recommendation by all was to dig out as much soil as possible, replace it with fresh loam, add mulch, and replace all the vegetation except the three Kousa dogwoods (Cornus kousa), which needed pruning. While the results were good, several residents suggested adding more stone to create a rock garden.  Additional rocks donated by Judith Calbretta were added by Atlantic the following year, as the plants have taken hold and matured, the appearance of the island continues to improve.  Eventually the second island located at the entrance from North Rd was put in 2023 to mirror the look of the East Shore Rd island.
