Rights of Way

Like all roads in Jamestown, the Town holds a 10-foot right-of-way along each side. Underground utilities (electricity, telephone, and cable) are laid in the rights-of-way. The roads were built in a pre-GPS era and the “as-built” location can vary from the approved original location resulting in rights-of-way that vary in width. To determine the exact boundary of a right-of-way, Town records have to be checked. Many lot owners have forgotten about the rights-of-way and have landscaped in these areas and are surprised and upset when a utility company shows up and starts to dig.
