Street Signs & Decor

Soon after the formation of the Association, the Board had to decide what sort of street signs would be in East Passage Estates, a decision left to the Board by the developer. Several alternatives were considered. The final choice was selected by popular vote. Pressure treated wood 4x4 uprights with either one or two arms along with shaped plywood signs were purchased from a company in Portsmouth. The posts and signs were painted white with the names of the streets in black. The following were ordered and installed:

2 two-arm signposts at America Way and Intrepid (east and west), with 2 double sided signs each.
2 two-arm signposts at America Way and Columbia (east & west), with 2 double sided signs each
1 one-arm signpost at Weatherly Court with 1 double sided sign
1 one-arm signpost at Ranger Court with 1 double sided sign
1 one-arm signpost at Shamrock Court with 1 single side sign
1 one-arm signpost at Courageous Court with 1 double sided sign
1 one-arm signpost at Constellation Court with 1 double sided sign

In 2010, there were several instances of vandalism in East Passage Estates and four wooden street signs were stolen. In the process of replacing them, other signs were found to be in poor shape because the original plywood had delaminated, and the signs were beginning to rot. All the stolen and deteriorated signs were replaced using PVC signboard, a manmade product that looks like wood but will never rot. Signarama, 6855 Post Road, North Kingstown, RI 02852, (401) 886-5000, made replacement signs and applied vinyl lettering. Signs are attached by eyebolts and locking rings.

The signpost at the east intersection of Columbia and America Way was struck by a car. A carpenter created a 4x4 wood patch and put the pole back up. The pole at America Way and intrepid (east) is leaning.

Except for the two-year period when vandals stole signs, the annual cost to maintain the posts and signs has been minimal. The signpost were last painted as part of a Scout project in 2016. Occasionally the signs need cleaning. A product like Spray & Forget Exterior Surface Cleaner can be used. This takes a couple of months to work but does a good job. This can be repeated as needed.
